About Me

Who the hell is this guy anyway?

Alan Briolat

So, for anyone who wants to know, a little about me...

My name is Alan Briolat and I'm a student at the University of York, UK. I've completed the first two years of my degree so far, and I'm currently on a placement year at BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre, Filton, UK. I'm working in the Advanced Information Processing department which, among other things, specialises in autonomous systems.

When I get home, my time is usually taken up by developing personal projects. One of my recent projects is DRC (Distributed Relay Chat, previously SARC, Self-Aware Relay Chat), which is an attempt to create a truly distributed chat platform with no high-impact point(s) of failure. When I get bored/frustrated, I play electric guitar (badly).

I was previously involved with our student TV station, YSTV, and have held the positions of Web Designer followed by Computing Officer. This involved managing and maintaining the several servers and desktops in the TV station, and also being responsible for the Computing budget for the station. I'm currently involved in the process of overhauling the way computing is set up in YSTV, and also the redevelopment of the aging website.

This site was originally set up as a place for me to collect all of my projects and make them available to anyone who cares to use them. I have been through a succession of domains and webhosts in the time I have been writing software, and as a consequence a lot of my work has drifted from view into the dark depths of backup directories never to see the light of day. At some point I decided that it was about time I put all of this work in a single place. I had originally planned to revisit a lot of my old software, update it and re-release it, but I find my time is better spent on new projects. As I get around to finishing some projects, more should appear on this site.

I hope you find at least something interesting or useful here. If one of my projects is now something you can't live without and you want to show your appreciation, please browse my Amazon wishlist.
